Smoking an Ashton Virgin Sun Grown Robusto
Michael’s Cigar du Jour – Ashton VSG
Today’s cigar selection is a beautiful and refined cigar, the Ashton Virgin Sun Grown Robusto. Let’s start with a logical beginning, the manufacturer’s description of this line…
A private estate in Ecuador furnishes the proprietary wrapper of Ashton Virgin Sun Grown from high-grade Sumatra seeds. The region’s natural cloud cover serves as a delicate sunlight filter, slowly maturing the highest primings. Four- to five-year-aged Dominican tobaccos procured from the most fertile plants underscore a powerful cedar and espresso flavor against a vibrant, dark chocolate expanse. Prepare to ponder something serious, Ashton Virgin Sun Grown is the original declaration of bold, balanced determination.

Ashton Virgin Sun Grown Robusto
Ashton is known for making very high-quality cigars, with a commensurate price tag. At the time of this review, the price for a single VSG Robusto is $11.35 at Famous Smoke Shop.
The cigar’s construction is flawless. The dark brown wrapper is seamless and very lightly veined. Inhaling deeply of the unlit stick, I can smell a distinctive ligero aroma from the wrapper. The deep tobacco aroma is accompanied by hints of chocolate and dark musky cedar. Intriguing!
The cigar proves to be richly satisfying, with complex flavors. My mouth tingles with a light white pepper. Retrohaling reveals tones of dark cocoa with a hint of cedar. It’s very nice treat.
Burn is perfect throughout. The intensity and mix of the various flavors vary as the cigar burns through its first two thirds. The final third is stronger, with the white pepper tones becoming more dominant.
The Ashton Virgin Sun Grown Robusto shows the companies commitment to quality, delivering a well-constructed cigar with a delicious full body and a surprisingly complex flavor.
